#WhyArmenia: Sarkis Acopian

Sarkis Acopian’s solar radio is eco-friendly and good for your pocket!

Born to an Armenian family in Iran, Sarkis Acopian was an inventor, industrialist, environmentalist, and humanitarian. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 19.

After graduating from college with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, he started his own company: Acopian Technical Company. There, along with his partner Thomas Workman, he designed and manufactured the first ever solar radio.

Smaller than a pack of cigarettes, this radio converts sunlight or artificial light into energy. This functioning radio is eco-friendly and good for your pocket.

As a philanthropist, Acopian made numerous donations to national and international causes among them the Acopian Center for the Environment in the American University of Armenia.
